Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen provide students with a wide-ranging analysis of the various communication styles and the ways by which text is now understood as the interaction of sound, music, vision, colour and language. Según Kress y Van Leeuwen (2001), los discursos sobre las habitaciones infantiles forman parte de los discursos de la ‘vida familiar’, puesto que representan conocimientos socialmente construidos sobre quiénes forman parte de las familias, qué hacen los miembros de las familias (juntos o de forma separada), dónde lo hacen, qué personas ajenas a las familias pueden formar parte de Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen argue for the centrality of visual images in the grammar of communication, which in many social contexts tends to favor ‘verbal’ expression. In the early years of schooling, children are constantly encouraged to produce images, and to illustrate their written work.

Linguists have shown that discourse is not only used and expressed in and/or by language; Kress & van Leeuwen also apply the term to music, architecture, and many other domains of culture. The notion of modes, however, is explained only in a very abstract way as “semiotic resources which allow the simultaneous realization of discourses and types of (inter)action” (p. 21).

This third edition of the landmark textbook Reading Images builds on its reputation as the first systematic and comprehensive account of the grammar of visual design. Drawing on an enormous range of examples from children's drawings to textbook illustrations, photo-journalism to fine art, as well as three-dimensional forms such as sculpture and toys, the authors examine the ways in which van Leeuwen suggests that colour naming practices are similarly a process of such experiential re-coding. Chapter 5 is then the theoretical core of the book, building substantially on earlier joint work with Gunther Kress (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2002). Here van Leeuwen proposes what he terms a Again, Kress & van Leeuwen do not mention that this also gives, in this case, “non-musicians” access to the field. In the last chapter, the authors recapitulate and suggest further research topics.
